J. Miller

J. Miller

Captain Jonathan Miller was born on Senqua 575 into a family defined by naval service. Gifted, disciplined and relentlessly ambitious, he graduated valedictorian from the Orlan Naval Academy before rising rapidly through Zeus’s Hydra Fleet. His command of the Blessed Eye, one of Hydra’s largest cruisers, earned him a reputation as a formidable officer and a symbol of Zeus military authority.

Then he disappeared. The exact reason for Miller’s departure remains obscured by rumour, but years later he resurfaced far beyond the empire as captain of the mercenary cruiser Avenging Sun. There he replaced regulation with something more personal: loyalty.

His defining decision came on Higashikawa, where he discovered a traumatised young Mitsuko amid the ruins. Against the objections of his crew, Miller took her aboard and became her guardian, mentor and moral anchor. He trained her extraordinary violence into discipline, teaching restraint where instinct demanded blood.

Miller is a contradiction: a product of Zeus who chose rebellion, a military traditionalist commanding outcasts, and a stern father figure who rarely admits how deeply he cares. He sees the Avenging Sun not merely as a ship, but as proof that people discarded by civilisation can still choose what they become.

Kazuomi Nagasawa

Kazuomi Nagasawa

Kazuomi Nagasawa was raised within the Itshū–Tokugawa clan, where loyalty and violence were treated as complementary virtues. A gifted operative, he became one of the clan’s most feared blades, eliminating high-profile adversaries with such consistency that his name carried weight far beyond his station. His service earned him the rare privilege of marrying Haruna Nagasawa, a woman of influence whose presence briefly suggested that life might offer him something beyond war.

For a time, Kazuomi resisted that possibility. Combat had become the measure by which he understood himself. Only the birth of his daughter, Ayame, revealed how much humanity remained beneath the warrior.

Then the Hakatsukasa conflict destroyed everything.

A supposed peace summit became an ambush. The Itshū–Tokugawa leadership and their families were massacred. Kazuomi survived, wounded and burdened by the knowledge that those he loved had not. Guilt transformed survival into punishment. He fled into deep space carrying the memories of Haruna, Ayame and a clan he believed he had failed.

On the Avenging Sun, Kazuomi remains disciplined, dangerous and deeply private. His blade is no longer merely a weapon. It is penance—an object carried by a man still searching for a form of redemption he is not convinced he deserves.

Mitsuko

Mitsuko

Mitsuko emerged from Higashikawa carrying almost no childhood worth remembering. The colony was violent, lawless and predatory, and much of her earliest life was defined by captivity, exploitation and suffering. What should have destroyed her instead revealed something impossible: a body capable of recovering from injuries that should have left permanent damage.

Her escape remains fragmented in memory. Blood, screams and a ruined colony are all that remain clearly. When Captain Miller found her, Mitsuko was alone among the aftermath, holding a battered knife and little else.

Miller brought her aboard the Avenging Sun and gave shape to the rage that had kept her alive. He trained her in combat, but more importantly, imposed a code upon her. Courage. Honour. Restraint. Rules designed not to make her harmless, but to ensure the violence inside her remained hers to command.

Mitsuko learned quickly. Beneath her quiet exterior lies extraordinary physical capability, frightening instincts and a capacity for brutality that even hardened mercenaries find unsettling. Yet she is not without tenderness. Her relationship with Yoko Yoshiro becomes one of the first genuine emotional bonds of her life, reminding Mitsuko that humanity is something more than pain.

She is survivor, weapon and contradiction—still deciding which of those identities will ultimately define her.

Ivy Hart

Ivy Hart

Ivy Hart was born during the Great Recession of 198 on Helacks 277-3, a colony collapsing beneath famine, crime and poverty. Her father abandoned the family while she was an infant; her mother was eventually consumed by alcoholism. By thirteen, Ivy had already learned that family could fail more completely than strangers.

A brutal betrayal by her older brother left her physically scarred and emotionally severed from the life she had known. Brief sanctuary came through an elderly man who took her in, but his death once again left Ivy alone.

She eventually found refuge within the Dark Moon Sisterhood. The order did not treat her as broken. They treated her as useful. Ivy was trained in espionage, manipulation and infiltration, becoming one of their most capable operatives. She learned how to read people, extract secrets and weaponise expectation.

Her loyalty ended when a mission placed Kale in her path. He was supposed to be a target. Instead, Ivy fell in love. Choosing him over the Sisterhood meant abandoning everything they had made her into.

Together they entered the mercenary world and eventually joined the Avenging Sun. There Ivy found something she had spent her entire life without: a place where trust did not automatically lead to betrayal. Her past remains present, but it no longer owns her.

Mya Hendrix

Mya Hendrix

Mya Hendrix has always understood machines more easily than people. As a child on Soul 66-9, she spent hours surrounded by discarded components, tools and broken mechanisms, learning through instinct what others required formal instruction to understand. Engines made sense. Families did not.

Her father, a decorated soldier, left for war and never returned. Her mother collapsed beneath the loss and quickly remarried, leaving Mya increasingly isolated until she was effectively homeless. Rather than surrender to the streets, she found work in a failing garage owned by an elderly mechanic. He gave her a chance; she gave the business a future.

Over time, the garage became respected across the system, and its owner became the closest thing Mya had to a father. For the first time, she had stability.

On her twenty-eighth birthday, pirates destroyed it all.

Soul 66-9 was attacked, survivors were enslaved and Mya escaped with nothing but the skills she had built with her own hands. She wandered until encountering the Avenging Sun, where those same skills made her indispensable.

As Chief Engineer, Mya keeps the ship alive through stubbornness, intelligence and an almost instinctive relationship with machinery. Every repair carries something of the man who once rescued her—and every functioning system is another refusal to let destruction have the final word.

Yoko Yoshiro

Yoko Yoshiro

Yoko Yoshiro was born beneath the shadow of greatness. Her father, Haruto Yoshiro, was a legendary pilot, and from childhood she was raised around cockpits, flight controls and the expectation that she would one day follow him into the stars. Before she was even born, Haruto secured her place within the Phaser Initiative.

Yoko belonged to the Mark II generation. Unlike earlier Phasers, whose enhancements often came with catastrophic physical consequences, her cybernetics were integrated more naturally. The revolutionary X Gland allowed her body to withstand the demands of enhanced piloting, while augmented reflexes and spatial awareness made her exceptionally capable.

Then her family collapsed.

Her mother died from an undiagnosed illness. Haruto descended into alcoholism and gambling, losing his career, home and eventually Yoko’s position within the Initiative. At his lowest point, he offered his own daughter as collateral against his debts.

Yoko survived captivity and eventually escaped by hiding aboard the Avenging Sun. There, her natural talent and Phaser enhancements earned her a place at the controls.

The ship gave Yoko something she had lost long before freedom: direction. In flight she reclaimed the future stolen from her, and among the crew she found a family built not on blood, but on choice.

Weber

Weber

Weber was born a prisoner on Organgular 997, a mining colony where incarceration and slavery were effectively the same thing. His mother died within that system, leaving him to grow up surrounded by exhaustion, cruelty and the certainty that nobody beyond the planet cared whether its prisoners survived.

He adapted accordingly.

Weber became observant, calculating and ruthlessly self-reliant. He studied the guards, learned their habits and quietly built alliances among the prisoners. What began as whispered anger eventually became rebellion. Under Weber’s leadership, inmates overwhelmed their captors and seized the colony.

But Weber never mistook temporary victory for freedom.

He knew Zeus would return. While the other rebels prepared to defend what they had won, Weber arranged his own escape and sabotaged the colony reactor. When Zeus forces arrived, he launched into space and watched Organgular 997 die behind him.

Tens of thousands were lost.

To Weber, the lesson was permanent: loyalty can kill you, hope can blind you, and survival belongs to whoever is prepared to act first.

Aboard the Avenging Sun, he is valuable precisely because he thinks differently from idealists. Weber trusts leverage, preparation and strength. He may fight beside others, but somewhere beneath every alliance remains the prisoner who learned never to place his life completely in someone else’s hands.

Xiu Liu

Xiu Liu

Xiu Liu was born into the wealthy Liu family, heirs to a powerful interstellar trading empire. One of six siblings, she was not originally expected to inherit responsibility. That changed when her eldest brother suffered catastrophic injuries in an accident, leaving Xiu to become her father’s chosen successor.

She embraced the role completely. Business, education and family expectation became inseparable, and Xiu proved capable of carrying all three.

Then the Epion clan attacked.

During what should have been a celebratory shipment run, pirates ambushed the Liu vessel and massacred the family. Xiu survived barely alive, only to discover in hospital that she was the last of them.

Her inheritance offered no protection. Rivals moved against the weakened Liu empire, while the world around her treated orphaned children as resources to be harvested. Xiu fled before they could claim her.

Years in the underworld transformed grief into purpose. She learned how to survive, fight and wait. Eventually she found the Epion clan again and took revenge with a small force of her own.

The act destroyed neither her grief nor her memories, but it created a new identity. Xiu became a mercenary known for quiet competence, precision and directness. She no longer carries the Liu empire behind her. She carries only its name—and the decision to make it mean something again.

Toby Diaz

Toby Diaz

Toby Diaz grew up in the ruins of a promise. Corix S107 had once been intended as a waypoint for expansion beyond the Milky Way, but war against the Niloth and Morak drained its funding and left the colony to decay. By the time Toby was born, Corix was little more than a vast slum abandoned by the powers that had created it.

He was abandoned at four.

A local gang became his first family. Toby learned theft, weapon maintenance, mechanical repair and the thousand small rules required to survive Corix. As he grew larger and more capable, he became a protector and mentor to younger members.

Then the police found their hideout.

The assault killed almost everyone Toby cared about. Forced to flee, he eventually joined the Blight Rebellion, spending five years sharpening the combat skills that had begun as street survival. When that organisation fractured, Toby returned to the mercenary life, moving from crew to crew without ever finding permanence.

The Avenging Sun changed that.

Its crew were not respectable, stable or safe—but neither was Toby. Among them, he found people who understood that loyalty could be forged among the discarded. He remains shaped by loss, yet no longer fights merely for the next payment. For the first time, Toby has something worth staying for.

Horvat

Horvat

Horvat earned his reputation during the Galactous War, serving with the Fifty-Second Regiment in the defence of West City. Where others saw a collapsing urban battlefield, Horvat saw geometry. Streets became channels. Rubble became cover. Enemy movement became something that could be predicted and punished.

His most effective tactic was brutally simple: force advancing troops into prepared kill zones and destroy them before they could reorganise.

It worked until enemy armour and air support shattered the defensive line.

Forced back toward Central City, Horvat escalated. Buildings were rigged to collapse onto enemy formations. Retreat routes became traps. When the eastern defences finally failed and encirclement became inevitable, his regiment made its final stand.

Most died.

Horvat led the remaining survivors underground, where he activated a final network of explosives that collapsed sections of the city and swallowed invading forces. In the chaos, his group fought its way aboard an enemy transport and escaped the planet before total destruction consumed what remained.

With no army left to return to, Horvat became a mercenary. His tactical reputation followed him across the galaxy until he eventually joined the Avenging Sun. As Executive Officer, he brings battlefield discipline to a crew built from chaos—a soldier who survived the destruction of one family and refuses to lose another.
