Some stories demand to be seen.

The Undying is making the leap from prose to graphic storytelling with Volume 1: Where Space Once Slept, a visual adaptation that brings the characters, machinery and horrors of the saga into the frame. This is the same dangerous universe told through a different language: expressions instead of explanations, shadows instead of reassurance, and moments of absolute silence placed between bursts of violence.

At the centre of the opening volume is the Avenging Sun and the people who call it home. Captain Miller commands a crew of mercenaries whose scars run deeper than their contracts. Around him are soldiers, engineers, pilots and survivors who have learnt the hard way that the next mission can always be the last. Their relationships are as important to this adaptation as the battles: trust shared across a cockpit, tension in a corridor, an argument left unfinished when an alarm begins to sound.

Then there is the vastness beyond the hull. A hostile nebula. An enormous abandoned vessel. Architecture that suggests power, history and something deeply wrong. The graphic novel allows these environments to occupy the page in a way that prose never could. Ships can dwarf the people moving towards them. A solitary figure can disappear inside a ruined chamber. One panel can contain an entire world; the next can force the reader to stare into a character’s eyes.

The approach is cinematic, but this is still a comic designed to be read. Panel arrangements change with the rhythm of the story. Wider images establish scale and isolation. Tight close-ups expose fear, suspicion and determination. Action sequences break across the page, while quieter exchanges have room to breathe. The aim is not simply to illustrate scenes from the novels. It is to rebuild them for a medium in which the reader controls how long a moment lasts.

Visually, Where Space Once Slept embraces the identity of The Undying Saga: worn military hardware, cybernetic bodies, claustrophobic interiors, cold holographic light and the crimson menace of the Hades Nebula. Beauty and decay sit side by side. So do the familiar and the monstrous. From the imposing silhouette of a warship to the smallest detail in a battered suit of armour, the artwork is intended to make the setting feel physical, inhabited and perilously real.

Readers who already know the novels will have an opportunity to revisit the story from another perspective, seeing familiar characters and locations take on a new presence. Newcomers will find a visual doorway into the universe, its crew and the mysteries waiting beyond the light. The graphic novel is a companion to the main book series, not a replacement for it.

This first volume marks the beginning of an ambitious visual project. As it develops, we will share artwork, character studies, pages and progress updates through the website’s gallery and news section.

The stars are dark. The ship is waiting. And somewhere inside that silence, something has begun to move.
