Humanity’s rise was built upon one conviction:
That distance could be defeated.
In the 22nd century, mankind first began to establish itself beyond Earth. Mars, Mercury and the moons of Jupiter and Saturn became the foundations of a new civilisation. Terraforming remained primitive and expensive, but orbital stations, mining colonies and controlled ecosystems allowed humanity to become something it had never been before.
A multi-planetary species.
Then came the breakthrough that changed everything.
In the 26th century, humanity invented the warp drive.
Exploration became colonisation, and colonisation became expansion. Entire fleets travelled into unknown regions, founding new settlements, discovering resources and pushing human civilisation deeper into the galaxy. This period became known as the Golden Era, a time of extraordinary scientific growth and cultural confidence.
By the 28th century, humanity had advanced beyond dependence upon natural worlds.
Massive artificial colony worlds and megastructures were constructed in orbit and deep space. Billions lived within engineered environments detached from planetary surfaces.
During this same period came humanity’s first encounters with alien life.
Primitive species were harvested for biological resources, ignored, displaced or exterminated according to human need. The belief that mankind possessed the right to dominate what it discovered began to harden into civilisation itself.
The 29th century brought planetary-scale terraforming and the deployment of World Inhabitors—enormous bioships carrying the genetic foundations of Earth’s ecosystems. Worlds were seeded, stabilised and prepared for settlement.
But expansion did not erase old instincts.
By the 32nd century, rival factions turned upon one another. Civil war fractured the unity built during the Golden Era, and worlds once created through centuries of progress became battlegrounds.
Then, in the 34th century, humanity discovered the Relays.
They allowed near-instantaneous movement across vast distances, opening new routes through the galaxy and accelerating human expansion once again.
The Relays also attracted attention.
In the 35th century came the Morak and the Niloth.
Humanity’s scattered nations were devastated.
By the 36th century, survival forced unity, creating the United Nations of Humanity.
But the wars did not end.
They merely changed humanity.
And within that century of fear, exhaustion and conflict, another power was rising.
The Pantheon was coming.
